Altered attentional control linked to catastrophizing in patients with irritable bowel syndrome

Abstract: Patients with IBS displayed reduced attentional control. Crucially, those patients with lower attentional control also had more catastrophizing thoughts than patients with better attentional control. These findings suggest that improving attentional control could be a valid target for psychological interventions for IBS. Statement of contribution What is already known on this subject? It has been hypothesised that psychological processes play a role in the maintenance of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and alt… Show more

“…This suggests that it is these factors in IBS that are the main driver for poor psychological health. Whether this relates to the pain itself or negative pain beliefs, 50 leading to catastrophizing, 51 is unclear and could be the subject of further studies. Our findings are supported by the results of Shekhar et al, 52 who demonstrated increased symptoms after meal ingestion and lower sensory thresholds in patients with IBS‐C compared with FC.…”

“…Nevertheless, attention is a complex phenomenon that is interrelated with other executive functions [18,20,55], and accordingly it is recommended not to study AB in isolation. There are indications that attentional control, as a part of executive functions, is compromised in patient groups [56], although not always confirmed [57,58] which could suggest that executive functions play a bigger role in AB in patient groups than in healthy controls. Regarding the exploratory investigation of possible associations between itch-related cognition and AB towards itch, it is interesting to note that specifically awareness of bodily sensations is negatively related to a lower AB towards itch (see S2 Table ).…”

“…A positive correlation can be appreciated with the anxiety trait, specific visceral anxiety and neuroticism. Similarly, Hubbard et al (2015) and Henrich and Martin (2018) found that the fear of uncertainty and the high severity of the usual symptoms of CPVP negatively correlate with effective scores in the orienting attention network; that the high scores of visceral anxiety, the presence of major abdominal pain in the previous week and the high severity of the usual symptoms of CPVP correlate negatively with effective scores in alerting attention networks; and that the high levels of catastrophizing . /fpsyg.…”
