Alteration of maternal serum irisin levels in gestational diabetes mellitus

Abstract: Objectives: The aim of our study was to compare serum irisin concentrations in pregnant women with and without gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Material and methods:This study was performed at the Tertiary Care Center, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, between January 2014 and April 2014. A total of 45 pregnant women with GDM (diabetes group) and 41 BMI-and age-matched healthy pregnant women (control group) were recruited. Maternal serum irisin levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent ass… Show more

“…Therefore, we believe that these associations were dependent on the maternal weight and BMI. A similar finding was reported that irisin was positively related with BMI and FBG [39], yet another study reported that none of the anthropometric parameters to correlate with serum irisin levels [40]. “…correlated with HDL-c [41]. Interestingly, Sinanoglu and group [40] proposed an ethnicity and maternal age related link with the fat content of colostrum instead of the commonly agreed notion of maternal pre pregnancy BMI. They also suggest that this finding can be used to design custom diets for mothers to enhance the mature breast milk nutritional value and in turn have a positive impact on new born health.…”

“…Kuzmicki et al also observed that serum irisin increases markedly in pregnant women, but this increase seems to be significantly lower in patients with GDM [ 11 ]. The study by Ural et al [ 12 ] supports these data. Thereby irisin may be a useful biomarker in early pregnancy to predict the development of GDM [ 13 ].…”

“…An important finding is that among our participants the decreasing irisin was not associated with complications during pregnancy, as the results of previous studies would suggest. Other authors observed that in women with gestational diabetes mellitus the irisin concentration was lower than in healthy subjects [ 10 12 ]. In our study group of physically active pregnant women we have not reported any case of GDM or preeclampsia.…”

“…However, a negative correlation between irisin and TG has been reported in overweight/obese children and adolescents aged 6 to 10 years old ( Suk et al, 2018 ). Alternatively, no correlation between irisin and TG was reported in pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus ( Ural et al, 2016 ). Thus, given that our present study is the first to demonstrate an association between irisin and TG in CRC patients, the relationship should be further assessed in future studies.…”
