The sampling of M. fimbriolata aims to estimate the population level and optimum timing for spittlebug control in the sugarcane fields. Thus, this study was conducted to determine the cost and efficiency of Metarhizium anisopliae (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) and insecticides utilized in M. fimbriolata control using two sampling techniques. The experiments were performed between November 2012 and April 2013, in a sugarcane field. In each experiment, apart from the control, treatments included Thiamethoxan (250 g ha ). In the first experiment, the M. fimbriolata nymphs and adults were monitored, while on the other experiment, the nymphs sampled were the small, medium, large, and the adults of M. fimbriolata with objective was to identify the timing of the application of treatments. In general, by monitoring the small, medium and large nymphs and the adult spittlebugs, the timing of the application was optimized, which increased the efficiency of M. fimbriolata control.

The use of Metarhizium against sugarcane spittlebugs in Brazil is one of the most successful and long lasting biological control programs using entomopathogenic fungus in the world. However, studies to monitor the fate of this fungus on the sugarcane agroecosystem are rare, especially with respect to its persistence, efficacy in pest control and impact on the local populations of Metarhizium. The present study aimed at documenting the efficacy and persistence of M. anisopliae strain ESALQ1604 in a sugarcane field by using microsatellite molecular markers. The species diversity of Metarhizium was characterized in insects, soil and sugarcane roots in a sprayed and an unsprayed plot. Although the infection rates were not very high (≤ 50%), the applied strain was recovered from spittlebugs after 7, 30 and 60 days’ post-application, but accounted for only 50%, 50% and 70.5% of all insects killed by M. anisopliae, respectively. All haplotypes from spittlebug were associated with a single subclade of M. anisopliae. The highest haplotype diversity was found in soil (h = 0.989) and in the smallest in spittlebug (h = 0.779). Metarhizium robertsii, M. anisopliae, M. brunneum; one taxonomically unassigned lineage was found in soil and only M. brunneum and M. anisopliae were isolated from roots. This study revealed the great diversity of Metarhizium spp. in the sugarcane agroecosystem and the importance of the local population of M. anisopliae on spittlebugs management.

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar a eficiência dos isolados IBCB 425, IBCB 348, UFGD 22 e UFGD 28 de Metarhizium anisopliae para o controle de Mahanarva fimbriolata, na cultura da cana de açúcar, em condições de campo. O delineamento experimental foi por blocos casualizados com cinco tratamentos e quatro repetições. Foram aplicados 2 Kg ha-1 de arroz + fungo esporulado com concentração de 1,0 × 10¹² com viáveis ha-1. As avaliações foram realizadas aos 15, 30, 60, 90, 120 dias após a aplicação, observando-se o número de ninfas e adultos vivos, parasitados e mortos não parasitados. Verificou-se que decorridos 15 dias da aplicação dos tratamentos encontravam-se insetos infectados. Observou-se maior eficiência para o IBCB 425 com 72,2% para ninfas e de 83,3% para adultos. O isolado UFGD 28 promoveu o menor número de ninfas por metro linear (3,7), com eficiência de 66,3%. No tratamento com aplicação do isolado IBCB 425 foi encontrado 0,7 adulto por metro linear e 70,0% de eficiência, 60 dias após a pulverização. A densidade populacional de ninfas e adultos diminuíram, 120 dias após a pulverização, ficando abaixo do nível de dano econômico (4 ninfas/metro linear), em decorrência da baixa precipitação ocorrida no período. O isolado UFGD 22 apresentou menor população de ninfas (1,5) e de adultos (0,8) por metro linear, com eficiência de controle de 85,9 e 75,0% para ninfas e adultos, respectivamente. O isolado IBCB 425 foi mais eficaz causando, em média, 97,9% de parasitismo para ninfas e 91,3% de parasitismo para os adultos, demonstrando o poder residual, decorridos 120 dias da aplicação.
