Purpose: to evaluate the accuracy of the "Assessment sucking scale to newborn in breastfeeding". Methods: this is a diagnostic study. The "Assessment sucking scale to newborn in breastfeeding" was drawn from an existing instrument, has been validated. The study included 152 mothers / newborn hospitalized in rooming in care. The study was divided into two stages, the first stage adaptation of the instrument and the second validation of the "Assessment sucking scale to newborn in breastfeeding" itself. For comparison between the instruments, it was considered as the gold standard "Protocol assessment of breastfeeding" proposed by UNICEF. Statistical analysis was applied to test the association chi square (first stage) and building the "Receiver Operating Characteristics" curve (second stage). Results: in the first phase, the "Assessment sucking scale to newborn in breastfeeding" was drawn from the behavior of newborns who were associated with breastfeeding, consisting of items posture, movement and cupping tongue and jaw movement. However, in the second stage, it was found that "Assessment sucking scale to newborn in breastfeeding" has a poor accuracy and is not a predictor of the behavior of the newborn in the breastfeeding. Conclusion: the "Assessment sucking scale to newborn in breastfeeding" cannot be considered a predictor of behavior newborn in the breastfeeding.

Purpose: To investigate the influence of hospital environment on aspects related to breastfeeding and communication on the mother/ newborn interaction during the breastfeeding process. Methods: This consisted on a cross-sectional study composed by 34 dyads: 18 in rooming-in care and 16 in intermediate/medium care units of a public hospital. Each dyad was observed at the time of breastfeeding, and data were analyzed considering the aspects standardized by UNICEF for breastfeeding. Verbal and nonverbal communication modes were observed. Results: Comparison of variables showed significant associations between hospital environment and the position of the mother in relation to the newborn and mother stimulation and vocalization to the neonate, with favorable percentage for the dyad that was in rooming. The other variables did not differ. Conclusion: Important conditions for the establishment of breastfeeding and communication between mother and newborn are influenced by the location of the dyad, especially the hospital environment.

Objectives: to develop and validate a care complexity assessment system adapted for mothers and newborns, based on two pre-existing scales. Methods: this is a cross-sectional study of psychometric validation of instruments, applied in a roomming-in, in 2016. The instrument has 13 indicators, submitted to the evaluation of a panel of judges for validation. For the psychometric analysis of the instrument, five criteria were adopted: a) internal consistency through Cronbach's alpha (αC); (b) intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC); c) correlation between categorical items, mediating Kendall correlation; d) ceiling and floor effect; e) Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin test. Results: after evaluating the judges on the categories, the agreement was satisfactory, being equal to or greater than 80%. The mean total score of the 13 items was 22.5 ± 4.2, with an intermediate level score of 52.9%. For psychometric validation purposes, the instrument presented αC scores of 0.73 points, between minimum items of 0.70 and maximum of 0.74 points. In the correlation of αC by items and the total score, the instrument showed high relationships (r2: 0.84). In the ICC assessment of 0.73 points (CI95%= 0.71-0.75; p<0.001). Conclusion: the questionnaire presented psychometric indicators of acceptable content validity, with statistical evidence of reliability, obtained by satisfactory inter-rateragreement.
