Aloe vera: magic or medicine?

Abstract: Some recent studies appear to show topical and orally administered aloe vera preparations in patients with chronic venous leg ulcers may aid healing. Despite encouraging results, in the absence of larger research studies, the author cautions against generalisation of this complementary treatment.

It has numerous monosaccharide's and polysaccharides; vitamins B 1 , B 2 , B 6 , and C; niacinamide and choline, several inorganic ingredients, enzymes (acid and alkaline phosphatase, amylase, lactate dehydrogenase, lipase) and organic compounds (aloin, barbaloin, and emodin) as described by [22].…”

“…Also, in a study, it was postulated that the inclusion of amino acids in collagen-chitosan scaffolds, resulted in increased hydrophillicity of the scaffolds 28 . In the prepared gel, the addition of aloe gel containing amino acids 29 into the COL-CS composite may be responsible for the increased hydrophillicity of the gel. Therefore our prepared AV blended COL-CS gel has been reported to possess increased hydrophillicity.…”

“…Components of aloe vera can be divided into the following groups: vitamins such as A,C, E and trace of B12; enzymes like bradykinase, lipases and proteases which break down food and aid digestion; minerals such as calcium, sodium, manganese and selenium. Sugars in the form of polysaccharides and glucomannans not broken down like other groups but appear in the blood stream and are able to exert their immune-regulating effect and form a barrier preventing absorption of unwanted materials; Anthraquinones, which are phenolic compounds found exclusively in the plant sap; to cite a few, these are the alopin and emodin which aid absorption from the gasto-intestinal tract and have microbial and painkilling effects; lignin and saponins also have antimicrobial, cleansing and antiseptic properties; fatty acids, salicylic acids are important antiinflammatory agents and amino acids, which aloe gel have as many as 20 important amino acids [4].…”
