Allozyme variation in the eggplant, Solanum melongena L. (Solanaceae)

Abstract: Enzyme electrophoretic studies were made in cultivated Solanum melongena L. (eggplant) and similar wild and weedy forms, several of which have been thought to be different species/taxa. Twenty-nine accessions of S. melongena, 33 accessions of weedy forms (referred to as "insanum") and 2 accessions of wild forms (referred to as "incanum") were surveyed for 29 isozyme loci. In S. melongena, 22 of the 29 loci were monomorphic, and nearly all of its genes were either also monomorphic or in similar frequencies in i… Show more

“…Analysis of the number of traits, including chloroplast DNA, enzyme variations and many other markers has led to quite uniform conclusions. The diversity between eggplant cultivars is usually described as low (Karihaloo & Gottlieb 1995; Sakata & Lester 1997), however there are some contrasting results (Singh et al. 2006).…”

“…The REMAP marker was applicated in a group of barley varieties from different regions to test whether generate sufficient polymorphism , the high degree of polymorphism observed in that study ,using REMAP assay the ratio of polymorphism was 100% (Kalendar etal 1999) [1].According to the results of this study ,the ratio of the polymorphism was 100%,it is indicated that the REMAP is a higher polymorphism information content of molecular markers. [8] [9] The isozyme and RAPD were used in eggplant to analyze the polymorphism, the low degree of polymorphism observed in that study ,it is indicated that the capacity of REMAP to detect the polymorphism was higher than the traditional molecular markers such as RAPD .…”

“…India is known to harbor a wide diversity of local landraces of brinjal and its wild relatives (Deb, 1989; Mace et al, 1999; Karihaloo et al, 2002). Early genetic analyses of Indian materials using allozymes (Karihaloo and Gottlieb, 1995) and RAPD markers (Karihaloo et al, 1995) reported higher levels of genetic diversity within populations of wild brinjal than the cultivated S. melongena . These authors also found close genetic similarity between cultivars and “ S. insanum” , which led Karihaloo et al (1995) to question the validity of a taxonomic subdivision between them.…”
