Allowable Bearing Pressure in Soils and Rocks through Seismic Wave Velocities

Abstract: Based on a variety of case histories of site investigations, including extensive bore hole data, laboratory testing and geophysical prospecting at more than 550 construction sites, an empirical formulation is proposed for the rapid determination of allowable bearing pressure of shallow foundations in soils and rocks. The proposed expression corroborates consistently with the results of the classical theory and is proven to be rapid, and reliable. Plate load tests have been also carried out at three different s… Show more

“…The foundation types are usually chosen based on the designers’ and builders’ opinions and experience, regardless of the specific engineering‐geological conditions and features of the house structure (Mangushev, ; Sušinskas et al., ). When selecting a type of foundation, it is necessary to take into account engineering‐geological conditions, climate impact, ground water levels, specific features of the structure, and builder's technological capabilities (Oloufa and Ikeda, ; Lepre et al., ; Tezcan and Ozdemir, ). Usually, the installation cost, materials, the excavated soil, the equipment used, etc.…”

“…Further, empirical studies have related seismic velocities to geotechnical properties of interest. A relevant example would be bearing capacity (Tezcan and Ozdemir 2012) , and (Kaptan 2012). The expectation is that large seismic velocities correlate with large bearing capacity.…”
