Alleviation of Drought Stress by Hydrogen Sulfide Is Partially Related to the Abscisic Acid Signaling Pathway in Wheat

Abstract: Little information is available describing the effects of exogenous H2S on the ABA pathway in the acquisition of drought tolerance in wheat. In this study, we investigated the physiological parameters, the transcription levels of several genes involved in the abscisic acid (ABA) metabolism pathway, and the ABA and H2S contents in wheat leaves and roots under drought stress in response to exogenous NaHS treatment. The results showed that pretreatment with NaHS significantly increased plant height and the leaf r… Show more

“…In contrast to no S supply, application of S fertilizers considerably (P < 0.001) increased the activities of CAT, GPX and SOD (Suppl. Table 2), which was consistent with the maintenance of photosynthetic capacity following S supplementation under drought stress as reported by Ma et al 77 in wheat. Adequate S supply helps to counteract the drastic effects of ROS on nucleic acids and proteins through upregulation of antioxidant enzymes such as CAT, GPX and SOD 78 .…”

“…3A) was found, indicating the accumulation of ABA stimulated by nitrate was not associated with de novo ABA synthesis. Then, the expression of a set of genes involved in ABA biosynthesis and metabolism (Lee et al, 2006;Seiler et al, 2011;Xu et al, 2012b;Ma et al, 2016) was examined. As shown in Figure 3D, only the transcription levels of TaBG1 and TaBG2, responsible for deconjugation of ABA-GE, were affected by nitrate.…”

“…Several studies have demonstrated that drought stress induces H 2 S production in Arabidopsis thaliana [2,27] (Figure 1). Meanwhile, abscisic acid (ABA) application improved the endogenous H 2 S content in wheat under drought stress [28]. In addition, increasing evidence has indicated that temperature stress also induces the release of H 2 S in grape [29] and cucumber [30].…”

“…H 2 S has been reported to reduce the transcriptional expression of ABA receptors in A. thaliana under drought stress conditions, thereby enhancing drought tolerance [94] (Table 2). In addition, the exogenous application of an H 2 S donor (NaHS) improved ABA biosynthesis and ABA reactivation gene expression levels in wheat leaves and enhanced the plant and relative water content of wheat seedlings leaves [28]. Meanwhile, H 2 S was found to increase the survival rates of A. thaliana seedlings and significantly reduce the stomatal pore size under drought stress [27].…”
