Allergies in Germany – prevalence and perception by the public

Abstract: Allergic diseases are a common, often burdensome problem in the German population, but nevertheless the medical treatment of people affected is still insufficient. The proportion of patients receiving sublingual immune therapy as causal treatment is comparatively low. Active steps are needed to improve the utilization behavior of patients, e. g. to take advice of an allergy specialist.

“…The present study investigated the prevalence of atopy and allergy in all forms of uveitis. Previous studies suggested that the prevalence of the allergic disease in Germany 0 s population is 33% to 40% (Augustin et al 2013), comparable with our uveitis (34%) and control group (33%). Furthermore, the types of allergies were similar in both the uveitis and the control group and reflected the same pattern as has been found within the normal population in Germany (Augustin et al 2013).…”

Furthermore, the types of allergies were similar in both the uveitis and the control group and reflected the same pattern as has been found within the normal population in Germany (Augustin et al 2013). Interestingly, no patient with panuveitis reported a history of atopy in our study, but despite statistical significance, the low number of patients does not allow drawing general conclusions.…”

“…The survey's methodology in a population-representative sample has been shown to be valid in previous, methodologically similar surveys. 8,9 In these studies, important care characteristics for allergic illnesses (prevalence, physician utilization) and skin cancer (e.g. participation rate in legally mandated skin cancer screening) were determined to be well correlated with insurance company data and primary care data.…”
