“…Components of spectacle frames, which have been identified as causing allergic contact dermatitis include metals, plastics, solvents, antioxidants, dyes, plasticizers, UV stabilisers and waxes. p ‐Phenylenediamine (2), Solvent Red 179 (3), Solvent Orange 60 (4) and anthraquinone dyes (5) in spectacle frames have all been reported to cause contact dermatitis when used to colour plastic spectacle frames (2), but the other dyes, our patient reacted to, have not. The earliest review of contact dermatitis due to spectacle frames (6) stated that dyes were found throughout the plastic, but it seems that they are now more commonly used in surface dyeing of frames (7).…”

“…One positive control patient among 31 patch tested has been observed. 2 Cross-sensitivity between SO 60 and SR 179 was first shown by Tsunoda et al, 4 who reported ACD from a spectacle earpiece because of SR 179, with cross-reactivity to SO 60. Moreover, two cases sensitized to SO 60 cross-reacted to SR 179 ( Figure 4).…”

“…Solvent Orange 60 may cause cross‐reactivity to Solvent Red 179 (SR 179), CAS 6829‐22‐7, another perinone‐type plastic dye also used in plastic spectacle frames . The chemical and structural formulas of SO 60 and SR 179 are shown in Figure .…”
