Allergic contact dermatitis caused by vinyl gloves: a challenge for clinicians

Abstract: The use of vinyl gloves, considered "hypoallergenic", has become more and more frequent, both among healthcare workers and among housewives. However, contact allergy to vinyl gloves is not so rare, and it is often difficult to identify the hapten responsible for the allergic dermatitis. We report the case of a healthcare worker with an already known contact allergy to latex gloves, who developed a contact allergy to vinyl gloves several years later. We suggest that, when an allergy to vinyl is sus-pected, it w… Show more

“…Vinyl gloves are considered to be safer with respect to ACD, because they usually do not contain rubber accelerators; however, there are rare reports of ACD to vinyl gloves. [36][37][38] Furthermore, the CDC reports that nitrile, natural rubber, and neoprene (polychloroprene) gloves all maintain greater minimum tensile and elongation requirements when compared to vinyl gloves. 33,39 Therefore, medical gloves made of neoprene or nitrile may be implemented as rubber-free options that also protect against viral exposure.…”

“…The nitrile gloves are more suitable than the other types of gloves due to their lower costs, higher resistance to pathogens, and lower risk of allergies (34). In this regard, most of the medical centers have used nitrile gloves to prevent latex allergy (35). The increase in the spread of diseases and the environmental pollution has increased the use of protective gloves (36,37).…”
