Allelopathy Studies in Weed Science in India——A Review

Abstract: Allelopathy accounts for both beneficiary and detrimental biochemical relations amongst plants. The phenomenon has received great attention since the 1980's all over the world; however, in India, research on allelopathy just started in the late 1980's. Studies have been done with many crops, trees, shrubs and weeds under both laboratory bioassays and field trials to determine their allelopathic potential and its use for weed control. Plants belonging to the Asteraceae family are the most studied species for th… Show more

“…Allelopathy is an occurrence whereby a plant produces compounds or substances which influence the development of other plants, this can be beneficial or detrimental (Mushtaq andSiddiqui, 2017 andShah et al, 2018). In this context, allelopathy is an essential instrument in selective biological weed management.…”

“…The presence of weeds gives a negative influence on plants because of its adverse nature, namely as an allelopathy, allelomediation and allelopoly (Qasem and Foy, 2001). Allelopathy is a chemical compound produced by plants through washing, root exudation, evaporation and the decay of plant organs and thus inhibiting growth and development, as well as reducing plant production (Mushtaq and Siddiqui, 2017). According to Pereira et al (2016), weeds are also allelomediation and allelopolistic.…”

“…With considerable evidences adduced during the past few decades demonstrating the presence of inhibitory compounds in a wide variety of plant types and plant parts, the recent upsurge of interest in allelopathy, with major volumes of collected papers, books, journals regularly published 17,18,19 has established the topic as one of biological importance. In recent times it is focused on establishing research procedures which may improve the importance of evaluations of the allelopathic potential of exotic nonnative weeds Chromolaena odorata and Lantana camara which have become invasive and forms monospecific stands in different ecosystems in West Bengal and surroundings 20 . Chromolaena and Lantana are known to be serious weeds in 47 countries owing to its wide adaptability to different environmental conditions and habitats 7 .…”
