The chemical interaction between plants is known as allelopathy and it is related to the release of substances into the environment. The present study aimed at the evaluation of the allelopathic activity of the leaves of Leonurus sibiricus against the germination and initial growth of Raphanus sativus, Lactuca sativa, and Lepidium sativum. Chemical analyses showed the presence in the leaves of four major flavonoids (quercetin-3-O-a-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 6)-b-D-galactopyranoside; rutin; hyperin, and isoquercetrin) and of three minor flavonoidic compounds (genkwanin, 3?-hydroxy genkwanin, and quercetin). Extracts, their chromatographic fractions and pure isolated flavonoids showed different biological activities. A methanol extract of leaves of Leonurus sibiricus caused significant reduction only in the germination of Lactuca sativa, with no effects on the germinative processes of Raphanus sativus and Lepidium sativum. Some chromatographic fractions, containing the flavonoids, showed inhibitory activity on the initial stages of root growth of all tested seeds. The isolated flavonoids, at the higher concentration tested (10 (4 M) seemed to be responsible for the inhibition of the germination, as well as the radical elongation. Among pure compounds, 3?-OH-genkwanin and quercetin showed the stronger antigerminative activity at the concentration of 10 (4 M, whereas the radical elongation was reduced by rutin, isoquercetrin and 3?-OH-genkwanin. All compounds, tested at concentrations ranging between 10 (5 and 10 (7 M, showed stimulatory activities.

A laboratory experiment was conducted to assess the effects of allelochemicals of Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Eucalyptus citriodora and Eucalyptus globules on germination and root elongation using leguminous crop ground nut ( Arachis hypogea) as bioassay material. The experiments were conducted in sterilized petridishes. The effect of different concentration of aqueous extracts was compared with distilled water (control). The result revealed that different concentrations of E. globulus and E. camaldulensis extracts caused highly significant (p=0.05) inhibitory effect on germination and root elongation. The bioassays indicated that the inhibitory effect was proportional to the concentrations of the extracts so that higher concentration has a stronger inhibitory effect. The study also revealed that inhibitory effect was much pronounced in root development rather than seed germination.

RESUMO -A alelopatia é um dos fenômenos pouco estudados no Cerrado. Trata-se de uma ocorrência natural, resultante da liberação de substâncias capazes de estimular ou inibir o desenvolvimento de outras plantas. Objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar a ação alelopática de extratos da sucupira-branca (Pterodon emarginatus) sobre a germinação e o desenvolvimento da raiz e parte aérea do capim-colonião (Panicum maximum). Bioensa ios de germinação realizados em placas de Petri comprovaram que o extrato metanólico do tronco dessa planta, a 150 ppm, inibiu 83% do desenvolvimento da raiz, 75% da parte aérea e 30% da germinação de sementes de capim-colonião. Em casa de vegetação, os resultados de inibição foram de 83% para a parte aérea, 80% para a raiz e 63% para a germinação, mas somente na concentração de 400 ppm. Frações do extrato metanólico bruto obtidas por cromatografia de coluna cromatográfica não reproduziram os resultados de inibição obtidos inicialmente. A fração mais ativa (diclorometano/clorofórmio) foi analisada por CG/EM. Ela é constituída fundamentalmente por substâncias alifáticas de cadeia longa: fitol (13,5%), ácido oléico (12,8%), linoleiladato de metila (10,9%) e ácido palmítico (6,9%). Três compostos desconhecidos também se destacaram: um de baixa massa molar (98 Da, 13,5%) e dois de massa molar elevada (13,6%).
