ALLANITE-(Ce) FROM THE EOCENE CASTO GRANITE, IDAHO: RESPONSE TO HYDROTHERMAL ALTERATION

Abstract: The response of allanite-(Ce) in the Eocene Casto granite of Idaho to hydrothermal activity has been investigated. Unaltered, igneous allanite from the Casto pluton is characterized by a narrow range of compositional variation, with little or no zoning. A representative empirical formula, based on the composition of the least-altered grain, is: (REE 0.83 . Slightly altered crystals exhibit a rim in which Th is enriched, and La and Ce are depleted. Increasing alteration lead to extensive corrosion and replace… Show more

“…the measured composition of this mineral (see table 4) is consistent with thorite or huttonite (both thsiO 4 ). In general, th contents of allanites commonly range between 0.2-1.7 wt% thO 2 , (e.g., Deer et al 1982;catlos et al 2000;Wood & ricketts 2000;Poitrasson 2002). the allanites from the protolith contain 1.4-1.7 wt% thO 2 which is close to the maximum values of th contents reported in the literature (see above; Fig.…”

“…4e). Allanite has been shown to be prone to hydrothermal alteration (Morin 1977;Wood and Ricketts 2000;Poitrasson 2002), Fig. 4 and all allanite generations in the Cnoc nan Cuilean samples show evidence of alteration, particularly the biotite-magnetite vein allanite.…”

“…Mineralogical evidences suggest that REEs can be mobilized in a very limited degree (Wood and Ricketts 2000) due to the secondary mineralization during water-rock interactions. It is known that REEs can readily precipitate in various forms of minerals, among which phosphate minerals such as monazite, rhabdophane, or silica-phosphates such as, britholite are often considered as potential candidates to immobilize the long-lived radionuclides of the REEs and tri-and tetravalent actinides.…”
