All We Do is "Stalking"

Abstract: A particular use of the term "stalking" is emerging in social networks to indicate a wide range of reading practices aimed to gain insight on a subject. As a new type of reading, "stalking" does not always have a negative connotation and it is not limited to the personal sphere but ranging from ludic to professional aims. Considering the preliminary results of a case study in the READ-IT project, this contribution wishes to engage the hypertext research community in considering "stalking" as a type of reading … Show more

“…Here, people can be judged not just by the information in their profiles, but by the types of people in their networks (Donath, 2007). In turn, this type of personal, information-rich landscape gives rise to increasingly normalized behaviors of investigating and gathering online information about others in, or connected to one's own social networks (Lampe et al, 2006), colloquially known as "stalking" (Antonini et al, 2019). As such, in contexts where people use social media to align their offline and online lives, platform affordances like visibility and association make it easier to place people in their offline social contexts.…”

“…The ontology and the conceptual model value is two-fold. Firstly, the conceptual model is used to support the framing of research case studies, such as authors' libraries, diaries and correspondences [51], and new reading practices [52]. Furthermore, the ontology had been used in the implementation of the READ-IT annotation tool in a series of collaborative annotation campaigns.…”
