Planning for a regional shared print archive has included the formation of several task groups, the engagement of a project consultant, and local development of a holdings registry tool. The original impetus for the project was to clear maximum shelf space at member libraries quickly. The planning challenge that has emerged is to design a project that meets this short term regional need for re-… Show more

“…Another reason found for forming consortia was consideration of macro-principles, such as improving the country’s higher education system (Chauhan et al, 2011), including the domain of distance learning, when it is a question of sharing electronic resources (Chiwanza and Mutongi, 2018). Certainly, improvement of the education system, especially the state’s, is a national policy, and this type of consortium is a tool used to economize on financial resources (Chauhan et al, 2011), since among its functions is management of electronic resource licensing (Bird and Ashoughian, 2012), thereby preventing researchers from accessing less usual resources such as Sci-hub, #IcanHazpdf, LibGen and others (Sewell and Gaffney, 2016).…”

“…Kieft and Payne also contributed to a special issue (Volume 37, Nos 3 & 4) of Collection Management devoted to shared print repositories published in late 2012. The twelve articles in this special issue reported in the main on developments within existing USA local and regional repositories, but also included contributions from Canada (Bird and Ashoughian, 2012) and Australia (Wright, Jilovsky and Anderson, 2012). Articles that dealt with more general matters related to shared print storage included a contribution by Susan Clement (2012) tracing the shift in collection collaboration from acquisitions to storage and the emergence of more geographically distributed regional stores; and Samuel Demas and Mary E. Miller on the need for libraries (and networks of libraries) to update their collection management policy and planning documents as they "reenvision collection management in the context of local, regional, and national priorities" (168).…”

“…Malpas(2010Malpas( , 2011 further described OCLC's initiative in offering a suitable infrastructure to support large network of libraries, which share cataloguing records, digitized prints and digital repositories as a type of cloud service. The Canadians are joining the bandwagon with its Council of Prairie and Pacific University Libraries (COPPUL), a consortium of 22 university libraries in Western Canada, working with the OCLC consortium (Bird and Ashoughian, 2012). The OCLC Research, together with HathiTrust Digital library, New York University Emer Bobst Library and ReCAP (Research Collection, Access and Preservation) Consortium has embarked on the cloud library project, funded by Andre W. Mellon Foundation.…”
