“…We focused on articles written in English between 1990 and 2021 (articles published within this timeframe and early access papers). Following prior literature in sustainability (Bartolacci et al, 2020) and other fields (Pereira & Franco, 2020; Schmitz et al, 2017; Vojíř & Rusek, 2019; Zhang et al, 2017), we used the Web of Science Core Collection database, which is generally considered the most comprehensive source for scholarly work and includes only publications that demonstrate high levels of editorial rigor (Qiu & Lv, 2014; Web of Science Group, 2021), including all impact factor journals (Hahn & Kühnen, 2013). The search was limited to the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) and Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI).…”

“…During 1998–2008, the number of articles grew relatively flat. From 2008 to 2018, the growth rate of the number of articles started to accelerate, and after 2018, the growth trend was more pronounced, entering the so‐called take‐off phase (Pereira & Franco, 2020). Due to the time frame of the literature collection, the literature count for 2023 is still in progress, so we use a dashed line here.…”

“…Using a graph to illustrate the yearly distribution of publications, we identify the evolution of publications over time (Figure 3). According to management and economics researchers Pereira and Franco (2020, p. 1130), the yearly distribution of publications can be divided into an “emergence phase” and a “take-off phase.” In the selected bibliography, we find the emergence phase to be the period from the late 1990s until 2009. In this period, research publications on libraries, sustainability and/or sustainable development were few and scattered, with 1 or 0 publications per year and only 4 publications in total.…”
