Alkyne-containing chelating ligands: synthesis, properties and metal coordination of 1,2-di(quinolin-8-yl)ethyne

Abstract: A new alkyne-containing chelating ligand, 1,2-di(quinolin-8-yl)ethyne, is shown to form a mononuclear 1:1 complex with silver(I) and chelate the metal ion through both nitrogens and the ethyne moiety as seen by UV and NMR spectroscopy as well as X-ray crystallography.

“…To the best of our knowledge, crystal B of [Cu( 9)](ClO4)2 constitutes the first cyclam derivative to exhibit intramolecular non-acetylide alkyne coordination, although this coordination is weak. Several ligand systems have been reported previously to exhibit monomeric η 2 -alkyne coordination, 50,51 including the notable alkyne 'cages', 52,53 and organometallic acetylide cyclam complexes. 54,55 Xu and Chao prepared the Nd(III) complex of tetra-N-propargyl cyclen, however none of the pendant alkynes were coordinated to the metal in that complex.…”

“…Related R 2 P‐L‐PR 2 pincer systems incorporating a center alkyne moiety are sparsely reported. [ 111–114 ] Noteworthy, the group of Agapie has intensively explored complexes decorated with para ‐terphenyl bisphosphine ligands (R 2 P‐L‐PR 2 with L= aryl). This ligand family proved to be cooperative very flexible and redox‐active due to the unsaturated and coordinative versatile nature of the pendant central aromatic ring.…”
