Alkaloids from Egyptian Papaver rhoeas

Abstract: N-methylasimilobine was isolated as the major alkaloid from an Egyptian sample of P. RHOEAS L. Other alkaloids isolated from the same plant material were stylopine, coptisine, isocorydine and rhoeadine. Chromatography indicated the presence of at least nine other minor alkaloids.

“…It has been used in folk medicine for the treatment of inflammation, cough, diarrhea, respiratory problems, asthma, insomnia, and pain, and it can also be consumed as food [1][2][3][4][5]. Various phytochemical components can be found in corn poppy, such as alkaloids [2,[6][7][8], anthocyanins [9], flavonoids [10], and essential oils [11]. P. rhoeas can be cultivated in regions with a temperate climate.…”

“…This plant is claimed to be useful in the treatment of respiratory problems, asthma, cough, loss of voice, hay fever, insomnia, and intestinal and urinary irritations [3,4]. Previous phytochemical investigations on this plant have revealed the presence of mainly various alkaloids [5][6][7]. As part of our on-going screening of plant extracts for activities the purpose of this study was to investigate about the preliminary phytochemical screening of Papaver rhoeas L. and to evaluate analgesic and antiinflammatory activities of Papaver rhoeas L. aqueous extract in rodents.…”
