“…Berberine, an isoquinoline alkaloid isolated from several traditional Chinese herbal medicines, exhibits strong antimicrobial activity and has demonstrated therapeutic effects against diarrhea and utility as a heat‐clearing and detox agent in traditional Chinese herbal medicine applications. Modern research on the pharmacological effects of berberine have demonstrated that berberine also possesses activity that impacts the efficacy of antioxidants and exerts hepatoprotective, blood glucose‐lowering, lipid‐lowering, and antineoplastic and antiarrhythmic effects.…”

“…Type 2 diabetes is characterized by insulin resistance and a progressive decline in b-cell function (Laakso 2001). It has been reported that insulin resistance is an important factor in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes (Meier & Bonadonna 2013), which is characterized not only by decreased responsiveness of the peripheral target tissues (such as liver, adipose tissue, and skeletal muscle) to insulin but also by remarkable decrease in glucose uptake and utilization (Yang et al 2014). Thus, increasing glucose uptake of the above three key tissues is one of the effective therapeutic approaches for treating diabetes.…”

“…Those two proteins able to activate each other, AMPK activate SIRT‐1 by elevation the concentration of nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase and SIRT‐1 stimulates AMPK through deacetylation of serine‐threonine kinase LKB1 (Hardie, ; Sun et al, ). Also, BER has the capacity to recover insulin resistance syndrome through other mechanisms, where it protects β‐cell of islets of Langerhans from damage, allows glucose uptake by skeletal muscle, improves hepatic gluconeogenesis and decreases the concentration of lipids in the blood (Pirillo & Catapano, ; Yang et al, ). As a result of SIRT‐1 and AMPK pathway activation, adiponectin concentration was restored after BER‐chloride therapy in our study which similar to previous results (Wu et al, ).…”
