Alkaline phosphatase activity in the plasma of children and adolescents.

Abstract: We determined plasma (serum alkaline phosphatase activity in 854 healthy students of the Rochester, Minnesota, public schools. Prepubertal girls had somewhat greater upper limits than did boys, and there was a low trend of increasing activity in both sexes. At the beginning of adolescence increasing activities were observed, which peaked at ages 11 to 12 years in girls and at ages 13 to 14 in boys. Adult values were not reached until six to eight years later. In 180 pairs of siblings, a significant intraclass … Show more

“…19 In the present study, salivary ALP activity, protein concentration, and chronological age were investigated as biomarkers for skeletal maturation assessment since they have been associated with bone metabolism and general body growth. 20,21 The current results suggested that salivary ALP activity may have a promising diagnostic value in skeletal maturity assessment.…”

“…24 Similar to the current findings, Fleisher et al reported that males' serum ALP activity in adolescents was higher than for females. 20 Total, but not normalized, GCF ALP activity was shown sensitive to the growth phase while total protein concentration in GCF was not a reliable indicator of different growth phases. 25 To date, no published studies have investigated prediction of skeletal maturation from salivary proteins.…”

“…Plasma concentrations of PL were relatively higher in children, whereas plasma concentrations of PLP were relatively higher in adults. Although both groups cannot be strictly compared to each other, because adults were healthy and fasting [ 28 ] and children had intellectual disability, one might hypothesize that age-related changes in the activity of the extracellular ALPL enzyme (OMIM *171760), which hydrolyzes PLP into PL, might underlie this observation, since it is known that plasma ALPL activities are higher in children than in adults [ 29 , 30 ]. The relationship between PLP in plasma and ALPL has been previously shown in a genome-wide association study, in which a single nucleotide polymorphism in the ALPL gene (rs1256335) was associated with plasma concentrations of PLP [ 31 ].…”

“…Since ALP is a marker for osteoblastic activity, growing children have higher levels than fully grown individuals. Cross-sectional studies have demonstrated that the activities of total ALP in plasma parallel the childhood height velocity curve, with highest activities during infancy, smaller increases during puberty (the peak occurring earlier and lower in girls than in boys), and a post pubertal decrease to much lower adult values [35]. The bone mineral content showed almost no variation from the age of 7 to 11 in girls.…”
