Algorithm for Designing a Removable Complete Denture (RCD) Based on the FEM Analysis of Its Service Life

Abstract: (1) Background: The paper addresses the computer simulation and prediction of the service life of the base of removable complete dentures (RCDs) under typical loads caused by biting and chewing food. For this purpose, the finite element method (FEM) was used. It is assumed that various blocks of teeth, such as incisors, canines, premolars and molars, are subjected to cyclic impacts during a human life. (2) Methods: Both symmetric and asymmetric mastication (two- and one-sided loads, respectively) cases were co… Show more

“…They are also quicker to construct than hard acrylic dentures, with the trial fitting often being used as part of the final denture. In conclusion, flexible dentures are a highly desirable option due to their many advantages over traditional hard acrylic dentures [51][52][53][54][55][56][57].…”

“…Material selection is a relevant issue that is solved in various branches of science and technology, inter alia dental treatment (for example, manufacturing RCD). In this case, components are calculated according to the strength criterion (by the finite element method [ 1 ], as an example) and assigned margin factors. Therefore, reference data (primarily, manufacturers’ data sheets) should be taken into account.…”

“…However, in addition to the technological aspects of manufacturing RCDs, it is important to evaluate their effectiveness as a dental structure in terms of deformation behavior under applying point loads. In this formulation, an important role is assigned to methods of computer simulation of deformation processes, including those under cyclic loading [6]. Nevertheless, conducting full-scale experiments is relevant to verify models as well as to design dental structures.…”
