Alginate drug delivery systems: application in context of pharmaceutical and biomedical research

Abstract: Alginates are natural polymers widely used in the food industry because of their biocompatible, biodegradable character, nontoxicity and easy availability. The bioadhesive character of alginates makes them useful in the pharmaceutical industry as well. The application areas of sodium alginate-based drug delivery systems are many and these systems can be formulated as gels, matrices, membranes, nanospheres, microspheres, etc. Worldwide researchers are exploring possible applications of alginates as coating mate… Show more

“…Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanostructures have potential interest in many biomedical applications such as dental composites, drug delivery, biomedical devices, biosensors and tissue engineering (Ghanbari et al, 2011a). Cytocompatibility and non-toxicity are the features for making POSS suitable for biomedical applications (Gao et al, 2012;Jain and Bar-Shalom, 2014).…”

“…We focused on nanocapsules prepared from alginate, a natural biopolymer extracted from brown seaweed with well-known properties such as biocompatibility, biodegradability and nontoxicity, which overall makes it a great encapsulation material [21]. This anionic copolymer composed of glucuronic and mannuronic acid residues has several biomedical applications, including cell and drug delivery, dental impressions, wound dressing and bone tissue engineering [22].…”
