Aldose Reductase, Protein Glycation Inhibitory and Antioxidant of Peruvian Medicinal Plants: The Case of Tanacetum parthenium L. and Its Constituents

Abstract: Diabetes complications, including peripheral neuropathy, cataracts, impaired wound healing, vascular damage, arterial wall stiffening and retinopathy diseases, are among the most predominant health problems facing the world’s population today. The 22 Peruvian plant extracts were screened for their potential inhibitory activity against rat lens aldose reductase (RLAR) and DPPH radical scavenging. Among them, we have found that Tanacetum parthenium L. (TP) has the RLAR, AGEs and DPPH radical scavenging activitie… Show more

“…In addition, it was found to inhibit the advanced glycation end product (AGE)-forming of sorbitol and DPPH radical scavenging in rat lens (Hwang et al. 2019 ). Formononetin was reported to possess hypolipidemic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activity, which can improve the clinical symptoms of DR.…”

“…Luteolin has been reported to inhibit proliferation and angiogenesis in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), human retinal microvascular endothelial cells (HRMECs), and retinal vascular endothelial rhesus (RF/6A) cells induced by VEGF (Bagli et al 2004;Zhou et al 2016). In addition, it was found to inhibit the advanced glycation end product (AGE)forming of sorbitol and DPPH radical scavenging in rat lens (Hwang et al 2019). “…Previous studies unveiled the promising properties of some medicinal plants and its bioactive constituents (such as luteolin) in the management of advanced glycation endproduct (AGE)-mediated vascular complications observed in diabetes and other metabolic disorders [37][38][39]. Herein, we show that luteolin was able to significantly reduce immunoreactive AGEs' levels in the vascular wall, highlighting the potential of this compound to reduce oxidative stress, glycation, and vascular complications in diabetic conditions.…”

“…Tanacetum parthenium L. (LNP-23 TP) belongs to the Asteraceae family and is widely distributed in South America. It is characterized by a high potential to inhibit aldose reductase activity and shows essential antioxidative properties [98]. The leaves of feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) contain sesquiterpene lactones, out of which parthenolide is listed as the main biologically active ingredient [99].…”
