Alcohol outcome expectancies and drinking to cope with social situations

Abstract: Repeated use of alcohol as a coping strategy to reduce anxiety or discomfort increases one's risk of developing alcohol dependence. Previous studies have found alcohol outcome expectancies (AOE) strongly predict drinking behavior, in general, and also are related to drinking to cope. The purpose of the current study was to examine AOE that may be related to drinking to cope with discomfort in social situations. It was hypothesized that positive AOE, especially related to assertion and tension reduction, would … Show more

“…The overall strength of these mediated pathways supports a growing body of literature suggesting that the relationship between alcohol outcome expectancies and drinking behaviour is mediated by drinking motives (Carrigan, Ham, Thomas andRandall 2008, 1164;Galen, Henderson and Coovert 2001, 211;Greenfield et al 2009, 83;Kuntsche, Knibbe, Engels and Gmel 2007, 83;Kuntsche, Wiers, Janssen and Gmel 2010, 440). Therefore, it can be argued that drinking motives play a vital role in mediating the effect of positive alcohol outcome expectancies on drinking behaviour.…”

“…These results are broadly consistent with previous findings that socially anxious students expecting alcohol to reduce tension (which has been linked to drinking to cope) played drinking games more frequently than those who did not hold such expectations (41,54).…”

“…Drinking problems and coping motives for drinking, such as use of alcohol to reduce discomfort or anxiety, are important predictors of drinking behaviors (Blume et al, 2006;Carrigan et al, 2008). In addition, shifts to more active coping responses, as well as enhanced friendship networks, mediate between more mutual-help participation and better substance use outcomes (Humphreys et al, 1999;Humphreys and Noke, 1997;Kaskutas et al, 2002).…”
