Alcaligenes faecalis ZD02, a Novel Nematicidal Bacterium with an Extracellular Serine Protease Virulence Factor

Abstract: Root knot nematodes (RKNs) are the world's most damaging plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs), and they can infect almost all crops. At present, harmful chemical nematicides are applied to control RKNs. Using microbial nematicides has been proposed as a better management strategy than chemical control. In this study, we describe a novel nematicidal bacterium named Alcaligenes faecalis ZD02. A. faecalis ZD02 was isolated from Caenorhabditis elegans cadavers and has nematostatic and nematicidal activity, as confirme… Show more

“…Biological control has shown promise as an economically and ecologically friendly approach to reduce nematode damage. To develop biological nematicides, however, further investigation of novel environmental microorganisms is essential 8 because until now only a few bacteria have been reported to possess nematicidal activity and to show potential for effective control of RKNs 8 , 9 . Identification of novel biological control agents and the metabolites they produced has become an urgent need for the control of RKNs and is of vital practical and economic significance.…”

“…Tolerance to heavy metals has been reported as well 9 , 10 . Nanoparticle production 11 , nematicidal 12 and biocontrol activity 13 has been reported in addition to production of chemicals 14 , detergent 15 , gum 16 , and bioplastics 17 . Despite such high applicability of Alcaligenes species in major spheres of research and prospective benefits in industry, agricultural and environmental domain, it remains underrepresented and understudied at whole genome level.…”

“…Interestingly, some of these strains are toxic compound degraders (e.g., Achromobacter xylosoxidans A8 and Variovorax sp. JS1663) (36, 37), human pathogens (e.g., Bordetella pertussis Tohama I and Bordetella bronchiseptica RB50) (38), and nematicidal bacteria (e.g., A. faecalis ZD02) (39), whereas other strains represent typical soil bacteria (e.g., Pseudomonas ), plant rhizosphere-associated bacteria (e.g., Bradyrhizobium ), arctic bacterium ( Octadecabacter arcticus 238) (40), and antarctic bacterium ( Hoeflea sp. IMCC20628) (41).…”
