PurposeThis study aims to describe and evaluate various visual and creative tools for supporting the in-depth biographical interview aimed at analyzing educational communities and their stakeholders.Design/methodology/approachResearching educational spaces today requires new ways of understanding, analyzing and studying. The complex characteristics, functions and realities demand research that responds to educational singularities. It is a matter of deeply understanding the educational phenomenon's peculiarities. For these purposes, instruments and research paradigms are needed to extract data and reach information saturation regarding the data obtained from the proposed objects of study. With this in mind, the following paper suggests reflecting on data collection tools that can complement the interview and biographical-narrative research approach. The authors highlight the use of photo-elucidation, the biogram-based timeline, the organigram and the flight of the geese, all of which are instruments endowed with a visual character that allows a deeper understanding of the object studied.FindingsThe main contribution of this paper is to unpack the uses and applications of four visual tools that support the interview technique. First, photo-elucidation is presented as a sensory strategy to stimulate the narrative during the dialogical exchange of the interview. Next, the timeline is described as a visual concretization of the traditional biogram widely used in educational research. Next, the authors unravel the uses of the organizational chart in educational research, which, due to its nature and utility, provides a glimpse of the organizational functioning of an institution and is particularly suitable for research in institutional frameworks. Finally, the tool known as the flight of the geese is presented. This tool is recommended for use in educational leadership and teamwork studies due to its simplicity and high representativeness of the hierarchy of roles and functions.Originality/valueResearching educational spaces today requires new ways of understanding, analyzing and studying. Este trabajo enumera y analiza las herramientas de visibilización académicas que usan, o que pueden usar, las investigadoras en Comunicación, a partir del caso de España pero con vocación internacional. Este propósito principal contiene varios objetivos complementarios: detectar y enumerar los institutos y organismos universitarios de estudios feministas y estudios hechos por mujeres; descubrir y especificar, de los organismos anteriores, aquellos que ofrecen publicaciones académicas para sus investigadoras y para investigadoras de todo el mundo; revelar y referir las investigadoras españolas en Comunicación más citadas según Google Académico; e investigar y considerar, de las investigadoras más citadas, qué redes académicas, sociales y profesionales emplean para compartir sus investigaciones y mejorar su visibilidad. Con ello, pretende ayudar a solucionar la invisibilidad de las mujeres científicas, en general, y de las especialistas en Ciencias Sociales, en concreto. Emplea un método triangular: 1) institutos de estudios de género de universidades españolas; 2) posicionamiento de las 20 investigadoras españolas de Comunicación más citadas en Google Académico; y 3) redes profesionales y sociales que emplean. Es un método original pero replicable, para estudiar un número mayor de mujeres u otras áreas. Los resultados revelan que 25 universidades españolas agrupan institutos y centros destinados a visibilizar los trabajos de las investigadoras y 22 de ellos cuentan con revistas académicas. Se concluye que las investigadoras han de potenciar su visibilidad en todas las redes, pero las instituciones también han de reconocer su tarea.
