Alamouti-type polarization-time coding in coded-modulation schemes with coherent detection

Abstract: We present the Almouti-type polarization-time (PT) coding scheme suitable for use in multilevel (M>or=2) block-coded modulation schemes with coherent detection. The PT-decoder is found it to be similar to the Alamouti combiner. We also describe how to determine the symbols log-likelihood ratios in the presence of laser phase noise. We show that the proposed scheme is able to compensate even 800 ps of differential group delay, for the system operating at 10 Gb/s, with negligible penalty. The proposed scheme out… Show more

“…The constellation scheme 16QAM is adopted. We choose the LDPC code in [17] due to its low complexity and very low error floor resulted from the absence of 4-cycles in its graph [18]. The sum-product algorithm (SPA) is adopted for iterative soft-decision decoding with the iteration number of 50 [18].…”

“…In this context, the STBC codes are referred to, more appropriately, as polarization-time (PT) codes. PT codes have also been applied in PDM systems for other applications, including PMD compensation [4], [5], and mitigating polarization-dependent loss (PDL) [6]. Recently, PT codes have also been proposed for training-aided joint frame and frequency synchronization in single-carrier PDM systems [7].…”

“…In [10] we have proposed and demonstrated a PMD-tolerable DD-OFDM transmission using the polarization-time coding (PTC) which makes the receiver colorless, insensitive to input SOP, and transparent to both data format and bandwidth. The PTC approach, which has its origin in the wireless space-time coding [13], has earlier been introduced to the coherent optical systems for realizing the polarization insensitive receiver with enhanced PMD tolerance [14,15]. However, in the regime of direct-detection systems, to the best of our knowledge, this PTC approach has still lacked extensive studies so far.…”
