Abstract: We attempted to screen for telomerase inhibitingactivity in vitro from a total of 304 marine algae samples which were collected from various Japancoasts by nonradioisotope telomeric repeatamplification protocol (Non-RI TRAP) assay using humanleukemia MOLT-4 cells. Ten of the MeOH extracts andtwo of the PBS extracts from those algal samplesshowed telomerase inhibiting activity. In particular, the MeOH extract from a green alga, Caulerpasertularioides strongly inhibited telomerase activitywhen added to MOLT-4 cel… Show more

“…ethanol extract had the IC 50 values equal to 66.48 ± 4.96, 150.86 ± 51.56 and >400 μg/ml against MDA-MB-231, MCF-7, and T-47D cells, respectively. So far, there have only been several reports dealing with the cytotoxic effects of this algal genus,[ 32 33 34 ] and our study is the first to investigate the cytotoxic effects of this alga on breast cancer cell lines. In a research by Kanegawa et al .…”

“…C. zollingeri extract was observed to have moderate telomerase inhibitory effect on MOLT-4 leukemic cell line. [ 34 ] Studies done by Harada et al . on 306 marine algae revealed that the methanol extract of C. vaucheriaeformis with the concentrations of 50–100 μg/ml has a high cytocidal effect on L1210 murine leukemic cells.…”

“…Following up reports on the inhibitory activity of CYN ( 1 ) on microtubule protein polymerization, first synthetic CYN analogues in form of colchicine hybrids were generated, however with limited activity 3. CYN ( 1 ) itself is also active as inhibitor of telomerase,4 amylase,5 xanthine oxidase6 and plant lipoxygenases (LOs) 7. We reported that CYN ( 1 ) inhibits soybean LO with an IC 50 value of 5.1 μ M in an uncompetitive manner 7b.…”
