Akinetic all-semiconductor programmable swept-source at 1550 nm and 1310 nm with centimeters coherence length

Abstract: We demonstrate, for the first time, OCT imaging capabilities of a novel, akinetic (without any form of movement in the tuning mechanism), all-semiconductor, all-electronic tunable, compact and flexible swept source laser technology at 1550 nm and 1310 nm. To investigate its OCT performance, 2D and 3D ex vivo and in vivo OCT imaging was performed at different sweep rates, from 20 kHz up to 200 kHz, with different axial resolutions, about 10 µm to 20 µm, and at different coherence gate displacements, from zero d… Show more

“…The measurement range is primarily limited by the k-clock frequency, and also by the coherence length of the wavelength sweeping light source. The former limitation can be resolved by using a high-frequency k-clock generator [28], and the latter can be resolved by using light sources with a more longer coherence length, such as akinetic light source [53] or VCSEL light source [54].…”

“…For those phase-sensitive imaging applications, the repeatability of wavelength sweeping from frame to frame, i.e. the wavelength repeatability of the swept source, is very important for signal retrieval [10]. Among those conventional swept sources, an extra k-clock signal is usually required for regular recalibration, owing to their poor wavelength repeatability [11].…”

“…To give a quantitative analysis of the phase stability, we recorded a long train of real-time temporal interferogram. Specifically, 5000 consecutive temporal spectra were used to calculate the wavelength repeatability of BLISS by extracting the phases over the interferogram, equivalent to the auto-correlation of the wavelength-swept source [10]. The unwrapped phase of each interferogram was calculated and collected as shown in Fig.…”

“…New tunable vertical-cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSEL) and akinetic light sources, can provide axial ranges exceeding 1 cm [1][2]. However, both VCSELs and akinetic sources are more expensive than the conventional microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) based swept sources widely available.…”
