Air pollution impacts from open air burning

Abstract: As part of the air quality monitoring and assessment, emissions from the open air burning of waste and biomass have proven important sources of impact on the population exposure. The emissions of a variety of air pollutants from different types of open-air burning have been evaluated. Simple model estimates are used to estimate the impact in areas downwind from backyard burning. Different models have been used to estimate the importance of impact and the reasons for odours detected downwind from waste dumping … Show more

“…In this sense we carried out a multiple comparison of the ERI (Tukey's HSD Post Hoc Test), which established two homogeneous subgroups: the first group was made up of the environmental elements with the least risk of being affected by the landfills (surface water, ground water, and soil); the second group comprised atmosphere, and health and society, which were the environmental elements most at risk. These results confirm the health problem generated by such installations and highlight the existence of a totally inadequate operational structure in terms of sanitary conditions for the majority of landfills in South America and the Caribbean [2,9,10] where it is frequent the presence of people www.witpress. com, ISSN 1743-3541 (on-line) who recover waste at landfills and thus subsequently spread diseases and infection among their families and acquaintances [10,11].…”

“…Especially in rural areas, households are almost equally likely to adopt backyard burning practices. While this is legal, it is not a favoured choice under environmental sustainability and public health criteria [43]. Home composting valorises garden waste into a useful soil conditioner, but this is not the case when burning the material.…”

“…Home composting valorises garden waste into a useful soil conditioner, but this is not the case when burning the material. The generated smoke also creates air pollution and nuisance [43]. Backyard burning requires no investment, however, while the capital cost for composting is an important reason for drop-out for some citizens [44].…”

“…Спалювання органічного палива у топках електростанцій і котельнях призво-дить до забруднення атмосфери (Sivertsen, 2006). Наприклад, Придніпровська теплова електростанція, яка знаходиться на околиці міста Дніпропетровськ, що працює на вугіллі Західного Донбасу, щорічно викидає в атмосферу пил, сірчистий ангідрид, оксиди азоту, що у 2 -3 рази перевищують допустимі норми.…”
