Agronomic performance of 27 cocoa progenies and plant selection based on productivity, self-compatibility and disease resistance

Show more

“…In the Scott-Knott test, the genotype distinction formed four resistance groups to witches' broom, with average values of dry broom per plant ranging from none to more than 55 (Table 1), suggesting the existence of different resistance levels. The dry broom count per plant has already been established as an appropriate parameter for assessing resistance to witches' broom and has been used frequently (Silva et al 2010;Yamada et al 2013).…”

“…Many high yielder plants have been selected in this trial for further tests as clones in regional trials, particularly in the progenies of RB 39 x CCN 51, CEPEC 94 x CCN 10, PA 169 x CCN 10 and CCN 10 x VB 1151 (Yamada et al, 2013). However, as shown in this study these progenies a high number of dead plants, except in the cross CCN 10 x VB 1151( Table 2).…”

“…Considering the results of the present work, it could be recommended the cross TSH 1188 x VB 1151 as rootstock (very low % of dead plants). However, restriction should be made because under field conditions, this was the progeny with the highest production of vegetative and cushion brooms in the experiment (Yamada et al, 2013).…”

“…The breeding program aims to develop new commercial cocoa varieties with high productivity, good general characteristics and greater resistance to diseases, and its central structures are recurrent selection processes for the association of genes and traits of interest. These processes are followed by regional trials of clones selected in the recurrent selection populations, for the final evaluation and selection of the new varieties (Lopes et al, 2011) This article contemplates the evaluation, for vegetative brooms (VB) and cushion brooms (CB), of some of the first generation progenies of the recurrent selection program in progress at Cepec, and similar works have already been presented by Albuquerque et al, 2009, Yamada et al, 2013, Benjamin et al, 2016, Benjamin et al, 2014 It has the hypothesis that there are differences among progenitors for resistance to witches' broom disease and differences in additive and non-additive effects on the inheritance, differences among progenitors and among progenies for the tendencies in the evolution of the number of brooms over the time, and that it is possible to increase the level and durability of resistance through the association of alleles or genes favorable to this character.…”
