Agroforestry Status and Its Role to Sequester Atmospheric Co2 Under Semi-Arid Climatic Conditions in Pakistan

Abstract: . Furthermore, the study area has the potential of stocking 3607.61 Mt and sequestering 13214.67 Mt of CO 2 at the rate of 327232.46 t CO 2 per year. According to calculations, increasing the number of farm trees/ha, average CO 2 sequestration rate of the study area can be increased from 2.05 t CO 2 ha -1 yr -1 to 3.59 t CO 2 ha -1 yr -1 . The role of agroforestry as C sink in not negligible and it should be given a dire consideration in policies, especially, in low forest countries like Pakistan to meets the … Show more

“…Soil underneath trees carries reservoir of carbon pool being increased amount of litter with corresponding increased organic matter contents [23]. Present study findings were well supported by studies [22,24] that soil organic carbon decreases with decreasing soil depth.…”

“…Within each union council (subdivision of tehsil, as noted previously), if the average maximum desired tree density specified by farmers in interviews was lower than the largest measured plot tree density in that union council, then the measured value was taken as the potential tree density. This approach allowed our estimate of potential tree density to be influenced by both farmers' perceptions as well as the logistical and biophysical limitations reflected in the maximum measured tree density [29,30]. Uncertainty in our estimates of potential tree density were expressed as the standard deviation of farmers' responses to the question, "What is the maximum tree density that you would plant on your farm?".…”

“…Using green plants is an efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective practice to improve salt-affected soils' quality [8,9]. Moreover, among vegetation, trees are considered to have more potential due to their higher tolerance index, larger biomass production, and longer periods of growth [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. However, only selected tree species can be grown on saline soils [17].…”
