Agroforestry: An Appropriate and Sustainable Response to a Changing Climate in Southern Africa?

Abstract: Agroforestry is often discussed as a strategy that can be used both for the adaptation to and the mitigation of climate change effects. The climate of southern Africa is predicted to be severely affected by such changes. With agriculture noted as the continent’s largest economic sector, issues such as food security and land degradation are in the forefront. In the light of such concerns we review the current literature to investigate if agroforestry systems (AFS) are a suitable response to the challenges beset… Show more

“…They may be useful alternatives to agricultural monocultures since they can combine the benefits of agricultural crops with those of trees and are generally known to provide many beneficial functions and services to humans and animals (e.g. Sheppard et al 2020). This may include an increased structural complexity and hence greater habitat diversity for animals in landscapes that are otherwise dominated by agricultural systems (Manning et al 2009).…”

“…One of the popular topics is to increase "biodiversity" without compromising yield in the intercropping system [65]. The blue-colored cluster is themed with "agroforestry" or "sustainability" [66][67][68][69], while the yellow-colored cluster is featured with "nitrogen", "carbon sequestration", and "microbe biomass" etc. [70][71][72][73].…”

“…Numerous researches link agriculture produce to different ecosystem's services and optimize these ecosystem's services [59][60][61][62] instead of considering carrying capacity as a boundary condition and determine maximum animal production as given in this study. Moreover, the recent research by van der Werf et al [63] summarizes current challenges for adequately representing ecosystem services in life cycle assessment methodology.…”
