Background: Development of high yielding and disease resistant cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) varieties, coupled with the promotion of efficient processing technologies, is the principal intervention aimed at changing the cassava sector in Cameroon. National research and extension programs have been spearheading efforts to disseminate these varieties alongside improving farmer's access to other technologies. Methods: This paper investigated the rate of adoption of the disseminated cassava varieties and processing technologies on adopting households. Survey of 100 households was done in 5 villages (Mbankomo, Akono, Okola, Ngoumou and Nkoldoum) in the Center Region of Cameroon. Results: The results showed that in all the study sites 40% of the farmers cultivate improved variety. They process cassava at home using small processing commercial processors. It is noted that the farmers prefer the improved variety because of their high dry matter content and most common processed cassava products were found to be "Baton" and "Fufu". Moreover, farmers that were able to obtain the improved variety appreciate this variety so much because of its yield and disease tolerant and most of all of because of their high dry matter content which the farmers appreciate a lot. The farmer's adhesions in community organizations or cooperative organizations have a higher tendency of obtaining credits for their farms seeds and other technical support. Thus the introduction of new cassava varieties would be enhanced by farmers' access to these facilities and services. Conclusion: The size of the farm, the availability and the adoption of improved planting material play a critical role on cassava tuber production in Center Region of Cameroon.

Le manioc, tubercule le plus consommé du Bénin, peut contribuer à résorber les problèmes de carence en vitamine A. L'étude visait à évaluer le rendement et la teneur en bêta-carotène de 15 variétés de manioc fortifiées en bêta-carotène comparées à la variété RB89509 dans les conditions agroécologiques du Sud-Bénin et à évaluer la résistance de ces variétés aux attaques parasitaires. Le dispositif expérimental est constitué d'un bloc aléatoire complet avec 16 variétés et 4 répétitions. L'analyse de la variance a été exécutée, le rendement en racines calculé puis la teneur en bêta-carotène estimée par variété. Les résultats ont montré que les cinq variétés adaptées aux conditions agroécologiques et phytosanitaires du Sud-Bénin sont I011412, I070539, I090090, I083594 et I090151 avec des taux en bêta-carotène et des rendements en racines respectifs de (9,82 µg/g ; 23,68 t/ha), (9,7 µg/g ; 34,34 t/ha), (9,69 µg/g ; 23,45 t/ha), (9,23 µg/g ; 30,42 t/ha) et (9,16 µg/g ; 33,29 t/ha). La variété locale, RB89509, a présenté le taux en bêta-carotène le plus faible, de 2,97 µg/g avec un faible rendement de 15,28 t/ha. Ces cinq variétés méritent une vulgarisation en milieu paysan selon une approche participative par les décideurs.

The objective of this study was to test for appropriate quantity of fertilizer (NPK 12-11-18) required to boost the production of cassava (variety TME 419) in the forest zone of Cameroon. The trial was conducted at the experimental farm of the Institute of Agricultural Research for Development (IRAD) in Mbalmayo. The experimental design was completely randomized block design in three replicates. The treatments were as follows: T0 (Control (No input)); T1 (200 kg.ha-1); T2 (300 kg.ha-1); and T3 (400 kgha-1). The data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS Statistics 20 Software. The results showed that chemical fertilizer improves the growth (number of leaves, plant height, and petiole length) and yield (number of marketable root, yield) of cassava mainly because it enhances soil nutrient availability. Thus, NPKfertilizer significantly (p<0.001) increased petiole length by 20.71, 27.83, and 31.62% for T1, T2, and T3, respectively at 5 months after planting (MAP). The highest plant height and number of leaves at 4 and 5 MAP was observed with T3 followed by T2 and T1. Similarly, the highest root yield (43.33±10.97 t.ha-1) was observed with treatment T3. Hence, the fertilizer application rate of 400 kgha-1 of NPK 12-11-18 appears most appropriate for intensification of cassava production in the humid forest agro ecological zone of Cameroon.
