The aim of this paper is to study the spatial selection of …rms once it is recognized that heterogeneous …rms typically choose di¤erent locations in respond to market integration of regions having di¤erent sizes. Speci…cally, we show that decreasing trade costs leads to the gradual agglomeration of e¢ cient …rms in the large region because these …rms are able to survive in a more competitive environment. In contrast, high-cost …rms seek protection against competition from the e¢ cient …rms by establishing themselves in the small region. However, when the spatial separation of markets ceases to be a su¢ cient protection against competition from the low-cost …rms, high-cost …rms also choose to set up in the larger market where they have access to a bigger pool of consumers. This leads to the following prediction: the relationship between economic integration and interregional productivity di¤erences …rst increases and then decreases with market integration.

RESUMENEn el siguiente trabajo se revisó cómo se ha abordado el fenómeno del cluster en la agricultura debido a que el encadenamiento entre eslabones de la producción y los modelos de gestión de sistemas agrícolas son cada vez más importantes para el equilibrio de mercado de los productos agroalimentarios, principalmente en un entorno que impulsa el crecimiento acelerado en la demanda de alimentos, bienes industriales y biocombustibles. Para tal propósito se discutió la relación entre agricultura, desarrollo rural, cadenas agroalimentarias y clusters agrícolas. Luego se seleccionaron trabajos de investigación internacionales y latinoamericanos que se ocuparon de caracterizar, medir o diseñar estos sistemas, con el fin de identificar variables, tipos de enfoques, métodos de estudio y principales aportes a la mejora de su productividad y competitividad. Al final, se encontró que los estudios de caso ad hoc han sido los métodos más aplicados, seguidos de los análisis multivariados y las tablas inputs-outputs. Además, se pudo ver que el enfoque cuantitativo a través de la simulación matemática, apenas comienza a incluirse en el problema de diseño de clusters agrícolas y que la preocupación por este tema en Latinoamérica también es reciente.Palabras clave: Clusterización, estudios, agricultura, desarrollo rural. ABSTRACTThis article is a review of how the clustering phenomenon in agriculture has been studied, given the importance of the link between production and agricultural systems'management models for market equilibrium of food products, in an environment that promotes the accelerated growth of food production, industrial goods, and biofuels demand. For this, the relationship between agriculture, rural development, agrofood chains, and agricultural clusters is discussed. In addition, Latin American and international research that characterized, assessed, or designed agricultural clusters were selected in order to identify variables, approach types, study methods, and main contributions to improving their productivity and competitiveness. Overall, it was found that ad hoc case studies have been the most applied methods, followed by multivariate analysis and inputoutput tables. Further more, it was observed that the quantitative approach through mathematical simulation is just beginning to be included in the problem of designing agricultural clusters, and that concern for this topicin Latin America is also recent.
