Agonistic and reproductive behaviors in males of red hybrid tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) x O. mossambicus (Peters, 1852) (Osteichthyes: Cichlidae)

Abstract: The red hybrid tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) x O. mossambicus (Peters, 1852) is a fertile hybrid used in the semi-intensive level of fish culture in the Northeast of Brazil. It is a territorial cichlid and is highly aggressive towards conspecifics during the breeding season. The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe the aggressive behaviour displayed by the males of this hybrid in non-reproductive and reproductive contexts. Behavioural observations revealed that aggression dis… Show more

“…A significant proportion of farmed sturgeon is composed of interspecific hybrids (Acipenser naccarii × A. transmontanus) due to their high productive performance for caviar and flesh (Congiu et al 2001). Finally, another well-known example of the semi-intensive culture of hybrid fish is the red Nile tilapia, which is a hybrid of Oreochromis niloticus and O. mossambicus (Medeiros et al 2007).…”

“…Similarly, Ojelade et al (2022) found that environmentally enriched housing tanks resulted in the best mean weight gain in the Clarias gariepinus. The O. niloticus fish is known for its aggressive and territorial behavior (Medeiros et al, 2015). The heavy structural complexity of the tanks, providing adequate shelter (minimal in tanks with moderate structural enrichments and absent in tanks with no structural enrichments), allows subordinate fish to escape from the aggressive encounters.…”
