“…The reactivity and lifetime of species produced by CF 4 in the avalanches, particularly in the presence of organic pollutants, water or oxygen, have been extensively analysed (Schreiner, 2001). It was also found that, when exposing detectors containing CF 4 in the gas mixture, long-lived electro-negative molecules form and propagate with the gas flow (Capeáns et al, 1993); this propagation has been confirmed by other studies (Danilov et al, 2003;Akesson et al, 2002) and can affect the efficiency of large systems having several detectors in series. Widely used in high-energy and particle physics, gaseous radiation detectors are undergoing continuous development. The first part of this book provides a solid background for understanding the basic processes leading to the detection and tracking of charged particles, photons, and neutrons.
