High voltage outdoor composite insulators used on transmission lines can be subject to degradation due to electrical discharge activity at the core-sheath interface. A methodology is described to explore the effect of de-bonding or loss of adhesion between the sheath and core in composite insulators. The use of planar geometry materials allows interfacial pressure to be varied and facilitates physical and optical imaging of the tracking as it grows and chemical analysis of the samples after aging. The associated electrode geometry allowed the tracking to develop in a constant field, unaffected by the earth electrode. Low pressure between the materials accelerated the growth the tracks. A correlation between partial discharge magnitude and track development is identified. Electrical tree growth was also observed penetrating the epoxy resin, initiated from the interfacial tracks.

High-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission is known as green-energy transfer technology and has recently become an attractive alternative of high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) due to its high-power transmission capability and lower power loss. Use of composite insulators on direct current (DC) transmission lines experienced rapid growth in recent years due to their high hydrophobicity and better performance in contaminated environment than conventional ceramic insulators. During their service operation on DC lines, insulators are prone to more accumulation of contaminants due to unidirectional electric field. The contaminants under wet conditions allow leakage current to flow on the insulator surface. Being organic in nature, polymeric insulators have a tendency to age under the combined effects of electrical and environmental stresses. To fully understand the long-term aging performance of DC composite insulators, a detailed survey was considered necessary. Towards that end, this paper critically summarizes worldwide experience of aging performance of composite insulators in the field as well as in laboratory conditions.

Delivery of the Smart Grid is a topic of considerable interest within the power industry in general, and the IEEE specifically. This paper presents the smart grid landscape as seen by the IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS) Technical Committee on Smart Grids. We define the various facets of smart grid technology, and present an examination of the impacts on dielectrics within power assets. Based on the trajectory of current research in the field, we identify the implications for asset owners and operators at both the device level and the systems level. The paper concludes by identifying areas of dielectrics and insulation research required to fully realize the smart grid concept. The work of the DEIS is fundamental to achieving the goals of a more active, self-managing grid.
