Aggregation‐induced emission properties of pyridyl‐containing tetra‐arylethenes

Abstract: Tetra-arylethene is one of the most important aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorophores. The electronic effect usually plays a vital role in their optical properties. However, the relationship between AIE property and electronic effect in the same fluorophore is rarely studied. Here, we designed and synthesized a series of pyridylcontaining tetra-arylethenes, whose electronic densities could be easily adjusted by the N-oxide or N-methylation of their pyridyl moieties. The optical data of these compounds a… Show more

“…Despite the widely explored unique reactivity of N -oxides, the development of fluorescent analogs involving N -oxides remains limited. Instances include the N -oxide–BF 2 CF 3 complex for investigating fluorescence properties in solution and the solid state, 22 diketopyrrolopyrroles with pyridine N -oxides, 23 TPE-pyridine oxides 24 and fluorogenic scaffolds with quinoline N -oxide for H 2 S and formaldehyde detection. 25 Beyond the fluorescence property investigations, the pyridine- N -oxide group serves as an anchoring moiety in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs).…”

“…Over the years, such skeletons, that is, hexaphenylsiloles, TPE derivatives, polyphenylenes, tetraphenylthieno[3,2‐b]thiophene S , S ‐dioxide, and diphenylbenzo[b]thiophene S , S ‐dioxide have been widely used in the design of new AIEgens [19–22]. Molecules exhibiting AIE character have been used as components in organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) and field effect transistors and as fluorescent probes [23–25].…”
