Aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE)-active boron-difluoride dyes with reversible mechanochromic fluorescence

Abstract: A class of AIEE-active mechanochromic boron-difluorides were reported, and the mechanochromism was ascribed to the transition between H(J)-aggregation with loose molecular packing and J-aggregation with intense intermolecular interactions.

“…As for the fluorescence bands at 527 and 600 nm, they were ascribed to the monomer and π cluster emissions of nano-particles, which would emit red-shifted fluorescence compared to the monomers in dilute solutions. 41,57,58 The fluorescence properties of its single crystals also match this hypothesis. Similar AIE behaviour was found for MBAV-I (Fig.…”

“…In 2019, Yan and coworkers developed two novel solid‐emissive BODIHY systems, 57 and 58 (Figure 17A), which use phenanthrenequinone hydrazone derivatives as ligands. [ 72 ] The precursors were prepared according to modified literature procedures [ 73 ] followed by treatment with BF 3 ·Et 2 O to produce dyes 57 and 58 as red solids in yields of 95% and 90%, respectively.…”

“…Compared to those in solution states, the UV-vis spectra as in thin films were redshifted, indicating that the Cz/NCz pendants preferred the herringbone packed J-aggregation style in solid states. [33][34][35][36] Then, X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to investigate the crystalline properties of these thin films. Surprisingly, no obvious diffraction peaks were observed for PMCz 1 -co-PMNCz 1 , PMCz 2 -co-PMNCz 1 and PMCz 4 -co-PMNCz 1 based films, as shown in Fig.…”
