Up-converting rare-earth nanophosphors (UCNPs) have great potential to revolutionize biological luminescent labels, but their use has been limited by difficulties in obtaining UCNPs that are biocompatible. To address this problem, we have developed a simple and versatile strategy for converting hydrophobic UCNPs into water-soluble and carboxylic acid-functionalized analogues by directly oxidizing oleic acid ligands with the Lemieux-von Rudloff reagent. This oxidation process has no obvious adverse effects on the morphologies, phases, compositions and luminescent capabilities of UCNPs. Furthermore, as revealed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and NMR results, oleic acid ligands on the surface of UCNPs can be oxidized into azelaic acids (HOOC(CH2)7COOH), which results in the generation of free carboxylic acid groups on the surface. The presence of free carboxylic acid groups not only confers high solubility in water, but also allows further conjugation with biomolecules such as streptavidin. A highly sensitive DNA sensor based on such streptavidin-coupled UCNPs have been prepared, and the demonstrated results suggest that these biocompatible UCNPs have great superiority as luminescent labeling materials for biological applications.

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images can be used for dose calculation in adaptive radiation therapy (ART). The main challenges are the large artefacts and inaccurate Hounsfield unit (HU) values. Currently, deformed planning CT images are often used for this purpose, although anatomical accuracy might be a concern. Ideally, we would like to convert CBCT images to CT images with artifacts removed or greatly reduced and HU values corrected while keeping the anatomical accuracy. Recently, deep learning has achieved great success in image-toimage translation tasks. It is very difficult to acquire paired CT and CBCT images with exactly matching anatomy for supervised training. To overcome this limitation, we developed and tested a cycle generative adversarial network (CycleGAN) which is an unsupervised learning method and does not require paired training datasets to synthesize CT images from CBCT images . The synthesized CT (sCT) images have been compared with the deformed planning CT (dpCT) showing visual and quantitative similarity with artifacts being removed and HU value errors being reduced from 71.78 HU to 27.98 HU. Dose calculation accuracy using sCT images has been improved over the original CBCT images, with the average Gamma Index passing rate increased from 95.4% to 97.4% for 1 mm/1% criteria. A deformable phantom study has been conducted and demonstrated better anatomical accuracy for sCT over dpCT.

Triphenylborane and 9,10-diphenyl-9,10-dihydro-9,10-diboraanthracene, constrained to a planar arrangement with methylene tethers, were synthesized by intramolecular multi-fold Friedel-Crafts cyclization. These compounds were stable toward air, water, and amines, despite the absence of steric protection in the vertical direction with respect to the B atoms, and showed characteristic structural, electronic, and photophysical properties. In addition, upon treatment with a fluoride ion, these compounds underwent a plane-to-bowl conversion in a controlled manner.

On the basis of fluorescent resonance energy transfer from 1,8-naphthalimide to rhodamine, a fluorophore dyad (FD8) containing rhodamine and a naphthalimide moiety was synthesized as a Cr3+-selective fluorescent probe for monitoring Cr3+ in living cells with ratiometric fluorescent methods.

Two cationic iridium(III) complexes with bright green and red emissions were demonstrated as phosphorescent dyes for living cell imaging. In particular, their exclusive staining in cytoplasm, low cytotoxicity and reduced photobleaching, as well as cell membrane permeability, make the two complexes promising candidates for the design of specific bioimaging agents.

Phosphorescent heavy-metal complexes exhibit relatively long lifetimes and significant Stokes shifts for easy separation of excitation and emission and could be used as promising candidates for fluorescence probes. To date, however, very limited examples of the use of phosphorescent heavymetal complexes in bioimaging have been reported. Herein, a series of cationic iridium(III) complexes, [Ir(dfpy) 2 L] þ PF 6 -(dfpy = 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine; L denotes a series of N ∧ N ligands with different conjugated lengths), have been synthesized. By variation of the N ∧ N ligands, the emission colors of these complexes can be tuned from blue to red, while high quantum efficiencies are retained. Further investigation reveals that these complexes exhibit different excited-state properties, which are responsible for the significant emission color tuning. Moreover, the exclusive staining of cytoplasm and low cytotoxicity were observed for these cationic iridium(III) complexes, as well as good cell membrane permeability, which makes them promising candidates as fluorescent probes for living cell imaging. Furthermore, in order to tune the excitation wavelength to the longer region, another cationic iridium(III) complex with lower singlet and triplet energy levels was also investigated to be used as living cell imaging material, achieving a longer excitation wavelength of 488 nm.

Background: The aim of this study was to analyze and summarize the clinical characteristics of elderly patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and compare the differences of young-old patients (60–74 years old) and old-old patients (≥75 years old). Methods: In thisretrospective, multicenter study, the medical records of elderly patients who were diagnosed with COVID-19 in Hunan province, China, from January 21 to February 19, 2020 were reviewed. The characteristics of young-old patients and old-old patients were compared. Results: Of the 105 elderly patientsconfirmed withCOVID-19, 81.0% were young-old patients, and 19.0% were old-old patients; 54.3% of elderly patients were females. Overall, 69.5% of elderly patients had underlying diseases, and the most common comorbidities included hypertension (43.8%), diabetes (25.7%), and cardiac disease (16.2%). Of the elderly patients, 22.9% were severe and 10.5% were critical severe cases. On admission, the most frequent symptoms in elderly patients included fever (66.7%), cough (64.8%), and fatigue (33.3%). Lymphopenia (31.4%), increased D-dimer (38.1%), depressed albumin (36.2%), elevated lactate dehydrogenase (41.0%), and a high level of C-reactive protein (79.0%) were common among elderly patients with COVID-19. The median prothrombin time (PT) and the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) were longer in old-old patients than young-old patients (PT median 12.3 vs. 13.1 s, p = 0.007; APTT median 39.0 vs. 33.5 s, p = 0.045). Young-old patients showed fewer complications (14.1%) than old-old patients (40.0%; p = 0.0014) and fewer received invasive ventilator support (3.5 vs. 25.0%, p = 0.006). As of March 11, 2020, 85.7% of elderly patients had been discharged, 3 deaths had occurred, and 11.4% were still hospitalized. Conclusions: Elderly patients usually have chronic medical illness and are likely to have a severe or critically severe condition. They could show atypical symptoms without fever or cough and multiple organ dysfunction. Old-old patients tend to have more complications than young-old patients during hospitalization. Careful nursing, observation, and systemic treatment are very important in elderly patients.
