Agglomeration and trade performance – evidence from the Norwegian salmon aquaculture industry

Abstract: Geographical concentration of industries tends to be important for firms that depend on innovation and are intensive in the use of specialized technology and labor. In this paper, we investigate the interaction between agglomeration and trade performance in the Norwegian aquaculture industry. We include a variable for regional clustering in a standard gravity model and estimate its impact on different margins of trade. When controlling for destination country, we find that firms that operate in clusters obtain… Show more

“…Salmon provides a number of examples of innovations in the supply chain organization and sales mechanisms improving logistics and facilitating trade. These include coordination (Gaasland et al, 2020;Kvaløy & Tveterås, 2008;Olson & Criddle, 2008), contracts (Larsen & Asche, 2011;Oglend & Straume, 2019;, futures trading (Asche et al, 2016;Oglend, 2013), invoicing (Straume, 2014) and trade duration Straume, 2017;Wang et al, 2019;Yang et al, 2021). These innovations have helped creating a global market as the two largest salmon-producing countries, Norway and Chile, export salmon to more than 150 countries.…”

“…There are of course also other aspects of the industry structure that is important. In particular, 38 Asche et al 91,92 show that firms located in industry clusters are more productive.…”

“…A review of the available literature on food trade duration for the seafood industry shows that they have not investigated the firm‐to‐firm trade duration and the factors that affect these sorts of trade relations. For instance, Asche et al (2021), Gaasland et al (2020), and Straume et al (2020) have used gravity models to study the salmon and seafood exports from Norway by employing firm‐to‐country trade transaction data. In two studies, Straume (2017) and Asche et al (2018) have analyzed the trade duration of salmon and cod from Norway using firm‐to‐country trade transaction data.…”
