Ageing‐induced changes in glutathione system of sunflower seeds

Abstract: The glutathione system is thought to be involved in defence mechanisms present in plant tissues. The efficacy of this system was evaluated in large seeds of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L. cv. Peredovik) in response to accelerated ageing (43°C/75% relative humidity from 1 to 11 days). Differences between the embryo axis and cotyledons in relation to the glutathione system were also investigated. Additionally, lipid peroxidation was determined by measuring the malondialdehyde (MDA) content. All assays were perf… Show more

“…The ϩ or Ϫ signs in boxes indicate significant (P value of Student's t test Ͻ 0.01) up-regulation (ϩ) or down-regulation (Ϫ) of the gene between control and PEG-treated embryos at that particular stage of development. anthus annuus) seeds, and seed viability was strictly dependent upon glutathione metabolism because high GR activity was observed only in those seeds with high germinability (Torres et al, 1997). A positive correlation between activity of some antioxidant enzymes and embryogenic capability was also demonstrated in white spruce cultured cells (Stasolla and Yeung, 2001).…”

“…Peroxidação lipídica e 30 S. C. B. R. JoSÉ et al estresse oxidativo têm causado deterioração das sementes de oleaginosas durante seu envelhecimento. Em sementes de girassol, reduções de vigor e de viabilidade durante o envelhecimento acelerado estão associadas com a diminuição do potencial de enzimas antioxidantes e, desse modo, elevação da peroxidação lipídica (Torres et al, 1997).…”

“…The scavenging of free radicals and prevention of potential molecular damages are controlled by the defence mechanisms activated in plant cells. Those mechanisms involve low molecular and enzymatic antioxidants (Bowler et al 1992;Foyer et al, 1994;Torres et al 1997;Bailly et al 1998). The main antioxidants of the water phase are: ascorbate and glutathione.…”

“…This cycle is observed not only in chloroplasts (Asada 1992), but also in the cytosol, mitochondria and peroxisomes (Potters et al 2002). It involves specific enzymes, such as ascorbate peroxidase (APO), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MR), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR), and glutathione reductase (GR) (Bowler et al 1992;Foyer et al 1994;Arrigoni 1994;Torres et al 1997;de Pinto et al 1999). The active cooperation of enzymes and high levels of low molecular antioxidants may prevent the loss of metabolic balance in cells, maintaining their redox status at a high level.…”
