Controlled-release fertilizers are interesting alternatives to current commercial chemical fertilizers, which present a higher nutrient release rate, and can negatively impact the ecosystem. In this work, two urea controlled-release fertilizer types were manufactured from carnauba wax (CW), commercial granulated urea (U), and natural and sodium bentonite (Bent-R and Bent-Na, respectively). In the first type, the mechanochemical method produced fertilizers in bars, from a mixture containing different proportions of U, Bent-R, and Bent-Na. In the second type, the dip-coating method was used to coat urea bars with coatings containing different proportions of the Bent-R, Bent-Na, and CW. The cumulative urea release was evaluated over the 30-day incubation period, through soil columns tests and UV/visible spectroscopy. Overall, both fertilizers developed in this work presented lower cumulative urea release than standard fertilizers. On the other hand, the new fertilizers produced from the dip-coating method, provided cumulative urea release lower than that obtained by the mechanochemical method. In summary, carnauba wax and bentonite (raw and sodium modified) are promising materials for developing new urea controlled-release fertilizers. Furthermore, both carnauba wax and bentonite are non-toxic, biodegradable, relatively inexpensive, and created from materials that are easily purchased in Brazil, indicating that the new fertilizers developed in this work have the potential to be produced on a large scale.

Bentonitlerin endüstride kullanılabilmesi için bazı standartları (şişme, viskozite, filtrasyon kaybı değerleri gibi) sağlaması gerekmektedir. Bu özellikleri sağlayan ve herhangi bir işleme tabii tutulmadan kullanılan bentonit yatakları bulunmaktadır. Ancak, bunun yanında pek çok bentonit yatağı istenilen özellikleri taşımamaktadır. Bu çalışmada Kalecik bentonit örneğinin endüstriyel özelliklerini geliştirmek amacıyla soda ve MgO ile aktivasyon çalışmaları yapılmıştır. Deney sonuçlarından elde edilen bulgular ile ham bentonit örneği, soda ve MgO ile aktive edilmiş örneklerle karşılaştırılmıştır. Bulgularda soda ile aktive edilen bentonit örneklerinin katyon değişim kapasitesi (KDK), şişme, viskozite, likit limit değerlerinde kısmi iyileşmeler olduğu görülmüştür. Filtrasyon kaybı değerlerinin ise başlangıçta değişmediği, bununla birlikte artan katkı oranlarında filtrasyon kaybının arttığı görülmüştür. MgO katkısı ile yapılan deneylerde de benzer bulgular elde edilmiştir. MgO katkısı kullanılan deneylerde filtrasyon kaybı değerlerinin ham örneğe göre daha fazla arttığı izlenmiştir. Fiziksel özelliklerdeki değişimler, aktivasyon sonucunda bentonit birim tabakalarındaki Na+ ve MgO+2 iyonlarının artmasıyla ilişkilendirilmiştir.

Using polyaspartic acid (PAsp) and bentonite (BT) as the main raw materials, a new type of degradable soil water retaining agent (PAsp-AA/BT) was synthesized by microwave radiation. The optimum synthesis conditions and comprehensive properties of PAsp-AA/BT were discussed and the structure and surface characteristics of PAspsp-AA/BT were characterized by FTIR, SEM, XRD and TGA in the paper. The results showed that the optimum synthesis conditions of PAsp-AA/BT were as follows: the dosages of polyaspartic acid (PAsp), bentonite (BT), initiator potassium persulfate, crosslinking agent N,N′-methylene bisacrylamide was 5, 3, 0.3, 0.03%, respectively, the neutralization degree of acrylic acid was 75%, and the microwave power was 490W. Under this condition, the absorption ratio of the synthesized PAspsp-AA/BT in deionized water and 0.9% NaCl solution was 953 and 164 g/g, respectively. The synthesized PAsp-AA/BT had a high water absorption rate, good water retention and repeated water absorption, and the degradation rate in soil within 30 days reached 32.75%, with good degradation effect. The analysis of SEM, FT-IR, XRD and TGA showed that: the surface of PAsp-AA/BT was rough and had obvious pore structure, which was conducive to the diffusion of water molecules; polyaspartic acid, bentonite and acrylic acid were polymerized; the cross-linking structure was formed between polyaspartic acid, bentonite and acrylic acid; the product of PASP-AA/BT had good thermal stability. This study provides a new soil water retaining agent, which is helpful for the better development of soil water retaining agent research.
