Age‐specific determinants of post‐partum fatigue in primiparous women

Abstract: Primiparous mothers who anticipated new life with their infants to be difficult and who had an irregular lifestyle tended to report higher levels of fatigue during the post-partum hospital stay. Nurses and midwives should assess maternal sleep and eating conditions, providing support to ensure adequate maternal rest. Special efforts should be made to reduce anxiety about new life with infants among younger primiparous women who had experienced hyperemesis gravidarum.

“…Older mothers lack support with childrearing because their own parents are aging or absent (Yang et al., ), and their husbands are also older (Mori et al., ). Older mothers had ambivalent feelings about making lifestyle changes after delivery, experienced shorter sleep and meal times, were more concerned about difficulties with child care, and felt postpartum fatigue (Tsuchiya et al., ). Despite accessing a large amount of health information regarding child care in preparation for parenting, older mothers felt that actual childrearing was very different from that described in books or on the Internet (Carolan, ).…”

“…This study was a cause‐probing study. A subset of data from a multicenter prospective cohort study that was conducted to explore the physical and psychosocial well‐being during the first 6 months post‐partum in Japanese women was examined (Iwata et al , ; Tsuchiya et al , ). The data were collected in the main study at five points: 1 day before discharge and 1, 2, 4, and 6 months after childbirth.…”
