Age, growth and maturity of the Indian Shad, Tenualosa ilisha through otolith examination from different habitats in Bangladesh

Abstract: Tenualosa ilisha, the national fish of Bangladesh, is a member of the Clupeidae family and an exigent stuff of fish production in the country. It is locally called ilish, hilsa, hilsa herring, or hilsa shad. It can be found in almost every river, estuary, and marine environment in the country and has been recognizes as the largest single species of fish (Ahmed et al., 2008) and 12% of total fish production of the country came from this Hilsa fishery (Nima et al., 2020). Hilsa adds 0.35 million metric tons (MT)… Show more

“…The hierarchy of condition factor (CF) followed as S5 (2.5) > S4 (2.4) > S1 (2.3) > S2 (2.0) > S3 (1.9) (Table S2). The HMs and b values correlated to S1 and S2 sizes (juvenile to pre-adult stages), which corresponds to ≤ 1 year [71,83].…”

“…[83]. Besides, the T. ilisha specimens in different areas of Bangladesh including the Meghna river estuary ranged from 24.8 ± 5.52 to 45.9 ± 1.14 cm length and 178.3 ± 96.20 to 1378.1 ± 155.51 g body weight, which was determined between <1-6 years [71]. Moreover, the T. ilisha specimens were measured between 14-57 cm and 1-5 y in Kuwait and the T. ilisha ranged from 15-50 cm and <1-5 y in Pakistan, respectively [86,87].…”

“…These parameters were critical in understanding the growth dynamics of G. chapra in the lake ecosystem [24,25]. The slight variations observed in Lα and K values using different methods in the FiSAT II program were addressed, with emphasis placed on the accuracy of the K-scan method in determining asymptotic length [26].…”

“…Mortality parameters are essential to the execution of sustainable management practices for improved conservation (Hossain et al, 2016(Hossain et al, , 2019Ahmed et al, 2020;Saha et al, 2021). Natural mortality is an important component which is used to estimate exploitation ratios of a fish stock in an aquatic habitat.…”
