“…The type of C californicus (Kellogg, 1911) was described from the North Dome of the Kettleman Hills, upper Etchegoin Formation in Fresno County California (Kellogg, 1911;Stirton, 1935). The Etchegoin Formation spans from the late early Hemphillian to the early Blancan in age (Hosford Scheirer and Magoon, 2007;Janis et al, 2008), between 7.0 +/-1.2 Ma for the lower portion (Obradovich et al, 1978) and 4.1 +/-0.2 Ma for the uppermost (Sarna-Wojcicki et al, 1991), but the type and paratypes of C californicus come from the upper part of the section.…”

“…2). Sedimentation is controlled by sea level changes, regional tectonics, and sediment supply (Callaway 1990;Scheirer and Magoon 2007). The tectonic setting in the SJV transitioned from a forearc setting above a subduction zone to a transform setting with the initiation of the San Andreas Fault~30 ma (Atwater 1970;Fig.…”

“…Unlike many sedimentary basins, the SJV does not have buried evaporites, making processes like the initial composition of pore fluids, meteoric water recharge, and water-rock interactions the primary factors in developing the basin wide vertical and lateral TDS structure (Ramseyer and Boles 1986;Wilson et al 1999;Fisher and Boles 1990;Kharaka and Hanor 2004;Gillespie et al 2017;McMahon et al 2018). These processes are modified by stratigraphy containing extensive lowpermeability clays and shales (Faunt 2009;Scheirer and Magoon 2007) that can compartmentalize TDS by inhibiting meteoric water recharge pathways. All these processes combine to produce a TDS depth profile that generally increases with depth and that is fresher toward the eastern margin of the SJV (Kharaka and Hanor 2004;Gillespie et al 2017).…”

“…The noble gases are transferred back through the capillary by establishing a flow of water vapor from the transfer vessel onto a titanium sponge held at 950°C. Details about the subsequent purification and analysis steps can be found in the supporting information (Barry et al, 2016, SAES Getters, 1986, Stout & Gibbons, 1955. In addition, the supporting information contains information on the types of standards, blanks and corrections used.…”

“…Analyses of casing gas samples from injectate storage tanks in Fruitvale indicated substantial mixing with air . Geological and depositional history for the field can be found in the supporting information (Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources (DOGGR), 1992, 1998, Hluza, 1965Lillis & Magoon, 2007;Preston, 1931, Scheirer & Magoon, 2007.…”
