Age differences in feeling-of-knowing and confidence judgments as a function of knowledge domain.

Abstract: For two semantic knowledge domains, general and computer-related, feeling-of-knowing (FOK) and confidence level (CL) ratings and their relative accuracy were assessed in young, middle-aged, and older adults, after test difficulty was equated across age groups. Global memory self-efficacy beliefs were also assessed for each domain. As expected, greater age was associated with poorer memory self-efficacy beliefs only in the computer domain. The oldest two groups were found to be more underconfident than young ad… Show more

“…As previously shown in the literature, the results demonstrated no effect of age on semantic FOK accuracy (Allen-Burge & Storandt, 2000;Butterfield et al, 1988;Marquié & Huet, 2000;Souchay et al, 2007). However, our findings suggest an age effect on episodic FOK accuracy.…”

“…To date, only three experiments have examined the role of expertise in FOK accuracy. Roberts and Rhodes (1989) showed no effect of self-rated expertise in the accuracy of FOKs for general knowledge information, a finding repeated by Marquié and Huet (2000) looking at self-efficacy beliefs for computer knowledge in young and older adults. Of direct interest to the current study, Peynircioğlu and Tekcan (2000) objectively measured language expertise and its effect on FOK ratings.…”

“…That is, although older adults may be impaired on an episodic memory test such as recalling the details of a movie (e.g., Marche et al, 2002), they are not impaired in general world knowledge. Older adults' confidence in general knowledge is as high as younger adults' confidence (Marquié & Huet, 2000), and older adults are less susceptible to pressure to conform (Pasupathi, 1999), potentially making them less suggestible within the general knowledge domain.…”
