Age determination of Aedes cantans using the ovarian oil injection technique

Abstract: A study of the age structure of a population of adult female Aedes cantans Meigen was undertaken using the ovarian oil injection technique to determine parity. Results showed that, contrary to popular opinion, ovariolar sacs do not form gonotrophic dilatations and cannot be used for physiological age determination. Dilatations were formed only by follicles which degenerate at a very early stage in the gonotrophic cycle. The proportion which consistently do degenerate (the gonotrophic diagnostic index) decrease… Show more

“…Dissections for studying follicular dilatations were performed either on the same night of capture or on the following day, in order to decrease the number of recently oviposited females. In females that have recently oviposited, i.e., types A or B ovariolar stalks where encountered, Polovodova's technique can only be applied to follicles that have degenerated in an early stage of egg development [34]. Several of these non-functional follicles had to be visualized for a good estimate to be made.…”

“…The ovarian dissection technique, which is usually used for determination of the chronological age of mosquitoes, has some technical limitation such as the proportion of diagnostic ovarioles in the ovary declines with age and/or 1 1 1 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 3 3 3 3 3 too few diagnostic ovarioles may occur in some mosquito populations [22]. The current study was conducted to determine whether pteridine compounds were suitable for age estimation of A. stephensi.…”
